When you try to open an attachment in Lotus Note, the required application is launched but the file doe not open, and instead you get the following error message:

“There was an error opening this document. The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect”.

Also, the attachment name is unreadable, made only of little points or squares.

And this happens especially when your counterpart is Japanese, Chinese, Arab… or any nationality that use an alphabet different from the western one.

The problem is that Lotus Notes sometimes behave like a non-unicode program, especially to display attachment file names. Too bad… Anyway…

So, log on to windows as an administrator and go to Control Panel –> Regional and Language options –> Advanced tab.


Select the language presumably used for the attachment file name (Japanese in my case).

Click “OK”. You might be asked to insert your Windows install CD, and you will be asked to reboot.
